Back in the ’80s, Martirio already said it in her song — without even knowing what was coming. One of her most iconic tracks, written with Kiko Veneno, “Arreglá pero informal” (which loosely means “all dolled up, but casual”) was a tribute to the neighborhood woman heading to the supermarket on a Saturday: imagine it — a claw hair clip, red lipstick, a tracksuit… and sky-high heels. Looking back, it feels like she was predicting the coolest flamenco fashion trend of 2021, embraced by influencers, actresses, and models alike — a daring blend of comfort, elegance, and bold style.
As we step into a new year—hopeful that spring will bring flamenco dresses back to the streets of Andalucía and that COVID-19 is finally behind us—we look back at one of the most striking flamenco collections to hit the runway in recent years: “Lo Prohibido” SS2018 by Granada-based designer Antonio Gutiérrez.
This standout collection dared to blend streetwear into flamenco fashion, introducing sporty pieces, bright colors, and even hoodies to a traditionally classic scene. Suddenly, polka dots weren’t just for the feria—they were ready for glamorous nights out or even the boldest wedding looks.
LGM predicted it in our very first issue: breaking the rules is always in style. And nothing proves it more than the ongoing trend of pairing socks with sky-high heels, glittery sweatshirts, and a whole lot of attitude.
Can’t you just picture Rosalía rocking these looks? We totally can.
