Eco-friendly weddings, also known as green weddings or sustainable weddings, are no longer just a passing fad or a trend — they are becoming the present and future of the wedding industry.
More and more couples are concerned about being environmentally conscious not only in their daily lives but also on the most special day of their lives. Being sustainable isn’t a one-time action; it’s a daily commitment that should include your wedding day.
In Spain, there are still few wedding planners specializing in this type of event, but more professionals are betting on sustainable weddings and encouraging couples to care for our environment.
For that reason, we work with companies in the wedding industry that are also striving to be more eco-friendly. Sustainability must be a shared commitment among all the businesses involved in your special day, throughout every step of the planning process.
At Almudena Bulani, as wedding planners for over seven years, we have been raising awareness among couples about the importance of sustainability and reducing waste, so that the most beautiful day of their lives can also be kind to the environment.
By paying attention to a few key points during wedding planning, you can experience a truly eco-friendly wedding. Take care of the following aspects to make your celebration genuinely sustainable.
- Location
Eco-friendly weddings are usually held outdoors, where nature takes center stage: gardens, mountains, vineyards, farms, or countryside homes.
To reduce pollution, try to have the ceremony and celebration in the same place, avoiding extra travel and the use of cars or buses.
If you choose a morning celebration, you’ll save on energy for lighting; for an evening wedding, organic beeswax candles are ideal—they reduce waste and create a romantic atmosphere.
- Wedding Dress
Nowadays, there are many options for sustainable wedding dresses. Pay special attention to the fabrics, choosing natural fibers like organic cotton, hemp, recycled textiles, or even silk.
Also consider dresses you can repurpose after the wedding. Use sustainable accessories like espadrilles made of esparto grass, seasonal locally grown flowers for bouquets and crowns, and jewelry made with natural stones, minerals, light gold plating, or even family heirlooms.
- Groom’s Suit
Just like the wedding dress, fabric choice is key. Even accessories can be eco-friendly—think wooden bow ties.
- Catering
Food is one of the most important parts of any wedding, but luckily more and more caterers use organic products, including wines from organic harvests.
Desserts, including wedding cakes, can also be organic and made with seasonal ingredients, resulting in beautiful and delicious treats.
For tableware, choose conventional dishes, raffia chargers, cotton or linen napkins, and avoid plastic or disposable products.
- Decoration
An eco-friendly wedding can be spectacular visually.
Choose recycled or reused materials; consider tables without tablecloths or with sustainable fabrics like linen; organic beeswax candles; combine them with transplantable plants or even fruits and vegetables to create a truly natural décor.
If you don’t want to give up flowers, choose seasonal ones to reduce waste from imported flowers, or work with chemical-free grown flowers.
Remember, if you want to experience a truly eco-friendly wedding: REDUCE, REUSE, AND RECYCLE.
