The 5 wardrobe staples you’ll wear all your life

You should know that from a queen to a cashier, being elegant and distinguished comes down to having a discreet, high-quality wardrobe filled with timeless staples that never let you down.

If you look at fashion photos from the 60s, you’ll see that in over 50 years, the most important pieces haven’t really changed. They’re the ones we reach for when we’re not inspired—be it for an event, an interview, a casual outing or just everyday life.

White Shirt

The first and most important—yes, you guessed it—is the white shirt.

Don’t you dare have just one. You need several. One fitted, piqué cotton with a well-starched collar that forces you to hold your chin high (this one’s the best). Another one, two sizes up and in cotton, to wear tucked into your jeans with a few buttons undone, collar pulled back casually—trust me, it’s sexy. And finally, one with pockets, the most relaxed one, perfect as an overshirt that gives off a weekend-cool vibe.

Jeans

Next up, the always-essential jeans.

Start with the classic: mid-rise, straight-leg, slightly dressy. Choose the right fit and go for a good brand—it’s an investment you won’t regret. These are the kind of jeans that truly belong in your wardrobe staples. You can also add cropped skinny jeans with a distressed finish (their trend is fleeting, but fun), and wear them with your flashiest top. Or copy Chabeli in her first ¡HOLA! interview back in the 80s—add a splash of yellow, which is trending again. Honestly, buy some fringe, balloon, or trendy jeans if you want, but remember: the classic cut never fails.

Blazer

Number three: the blazer.

Please, don’t mess this one up. If you’re going to spend money, get one with a straight cut in a neutral color: black, navy, grey, camel, white… No piping, no prints, no super long or cropped styles. Okay, fine, the oversized ones with silk lapels in bold colors are fun too—as long as the shade flatters you and you promise to wear it at least 10 times. This piece should go with absolutely everything—dresses, jeans, tailored pants, cocktail dresses, miniskirts… you name it.

T-shirt

In fourth place—surprise!—the classic crew-neck cotton tee:

White, and we mean high-quality cotton, perfectly fitted. Wash it, wear it, wash it again—it should always look new. Then go crazy with prints, graphics, whatever you want. But the white tee? That one must be perfect. Actually, get two.

Heels

Fifth place goes to heels—of course! But never more than 6 or 7 cm for your go-to wardrobe:

A comfortable pump, round toe, mid heel, designer or ultra classic—but no platform, pleaseeeee… Black or dark neutral is best. I’m not suggesting this. I’m ordering it ☺ (sorry for being strict, but trust me on this one). You can have as many shoes as you want, but these—your heels—must be cherished and preserved so they last forever.
